Traveling as a family of 5

Five is the awkward number in travel. Standard rooms are built for four; booking sites quietly split you into two rooms; and “sleeps 5” sometimes means a fifth person on a rollaway the hotel may or may not provide. This guide is built on one idea: check the room, not the hotel — its published occupancy cap, its named beds, and its age rules.

Family-of-5 all-inclusive resorts

Cancun & Riviera Maya all-inclusives where one room works for 5.

One room vs. two rooms

When a big suite wins, when two rooms win, and the connecting-room trap.

⚠️ The three numbers that decide everything

  • Room max occupancy — not the hotel's headline number. A resort can “sleep 6” because one suite type does.
  • Named bed spots — if the beds account for 4 spots, a 5-guest allowance means someone improvises. We count beds conservatively and say so.
  • Age rules — some hotels publish exact combinations (e.g. “2 adults + 3 children aged 3–12”); a teenager can change the answer. Kids-stay-free ages are about price, never about fit.
