Hawaii family-of-5 hotels

Hawaii's big resorts were mostly built around king-and-sofa rooms for couples, so a family of five usually lands in one of three places: a two-queen room with a published max of 5, a one-bedroom suite, or a villa/condo unit. Hawaii also charges for extra guests more openly than most destinations — rollaway and extra-person fees are normal, and they are published. We record them as dated facts. Verdicts are for 2 adults + kids 5, 8, 11, from official per-room data.

Hawaii-specific gotchas

  • The fifth guest is often a priced rollaway. Many Hawaii rooms publish a max of 4 with a rollaway allowed for a fee — which is a different thing from a max of 5. We keep those separate: if the official max is 4, the verdict says so, and the rollaway fee is shown as a policy note, not as a fifth bed.
  • "Kids stay free" ages vary wildly by resort. Hawaii properties set their own child-age definitions — under 12, under 17, and under 18 all exist, and the age that counts for occupancy can differ from the age that counts for price. We record each field from its own official source.
  • Tower and view categories multiply fast. The big Waikiki and Maui resorts sell dozens of room types that are the same floor plan with a different view. Occupancy follows the floor plan, so we group by physical room type and note where the view splits the listing.
  • Resort fees plus parking can exceed $100 a night. Hawaii resort charges and self-parking are among the highest in the US. They are published, dated facts — check the policy notes on each hotel page before the rate comparison.
